Suffocating from the recent heat wave, we decided to head to the beach once again, to let some good mojitos chill us. Our first destination was el Bierzo - the second chiringuito after the pizza hut on Nova Icària. It’s quite a basic chiringuito, nothing fancy, over-priced just like most of them: an ok place for an after-beach or pre-party drink by the sea.
We didn’t have any fancy expectations about the mojitos, and well, let’s say that we were not let down. This was a mojito made to accompany the “red-burnt backs, black-coloured feet, need-for-a-shower” so typical of the Barcelona beach. The drink came in an enormous glass, full of those little floating ice-cubes... The mint was torn in tiny pieces, small enough to clog the straw, yet it didn’t contribute with much flavour. The sugar was well-mixed into the drink, giving a uniform sweet flavour, which is better than the ones with a sugar pile at the bottom. All in all this was more like a refreshing rum-lime drink. Not bad, fully drinkable, but still a step from being a mojito for my taste.
- Rum: Bacardi (the bartender said he usually uses Habana 3, while recommending Habana 7 for making mojitos at home)
- Lime: plenty
- Brown sugar
- Ice: Small cubes
- Mint: very little, in tiny pieces: watch your teeth
- Soda (Sifón Geizer)
- Big, cup-like glass
- 1 long straw in fluorescent colours
